Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
Dental checkups give our team a chance to find and fix small problems before they turn into major issues, and cleanings allow us to remove cavity-causing plaque from areas of the mouth your child can’t reach while brushing or flossing.
This not only preserves your child’s dental health, but it also makes sure that a toothache or cavity doesn’t pop up and force you to adjust your work and their school schedule to fit in a surprise dental appointment.
Also, these visits give your child a chance to ask questions, and this all conveys just how important taking care of their teeth is. It goes a long way in creating habits that will serve them well into adulthood.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
As with any of our patients, but especially children, our primary goal during a checkup is to make sure they feel comfortable and calm. That means we go at their pace and explain what we’re going to do before we do it. With young kids, we’ll even show them the instruments and discuss how they work.
You’ll have the chance to be in the room during your child’s checkup if you please. We’ll examine their teeth, gums, jaw, bite, soft tissues, and preexisting dental work so we can identify any damage or decay. That way, if treatment is needed, it will be relatively conservative and quick.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
One of our excellent hygienists will gently but systematically remove plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth, both above and slightly below the gum line. Even the best brushers have trouble spots they tend to miss!
Afterward, they’ll apply a fluoride paste that will give them an extra layer of cavity protection that should last all the way until they need to come see us again in six months. Ideally, your child shouldn’t eat or drink for a few hours afterward so this has time to strengthen their enamel.
